About

Whitney Johnson
BNurs, PostGradDipMentHlthNurs, Credentialed Mental Health Nurse

I am a dedicated mental health clinician, nursing leader, supervisor, consultant, and therapist, committed to enhancing the education, development, and practice of professionals who address the diverse needs of the community across Victoria.

Prior to establishing my private practice and partnering with various organisations and teams, I served as a Deputy Director of Nursing in a program-wide role. With over fifteen years of experience in the health and community sector, my career has allowed me to work in areas such as Infant, Child and Youth Mental Health, Eating Disorders, Forensic Psychiatry, Homeless Outreach, and Adult Case Management, in a variety of clinical and senior leadership roles.

This breadth of experience has equipped me with the expertise necessary to understand and navigate the complexities of health care and forge meaningful connections with both consumers and staff.

I was honoured to receive the Alfred Health Advancing Nursing Leadership Scholarship in 2023, which has supported my research on emotionally intelligent nurse leadership and its impact on staff wellbeing and retention. I had the opportunity to publish this work in the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing in 2024, and I was also grateful to be shortlisted for the Alfred Recognising Excellence Awards and the Alfred Elevate Awards in 2024.

I strive to foster collaborative and positive work environments where both staff and consumers feel safe, supported, and can thrive. I actively promote a culture of psychological safety and person-centred care, ensuring that our services are delivered with compassion, and that our staff are cared for and feel as valuable as I know they are. I would feel privileged to work with you and your organisation, and to be a part of your journey.

Whitney is arguably one of the most impressive nursing leaders I have come across in my 20-year career of nursing. I sought Whitney out for reflective practice to improve my leadership skills as a nurse practitioner. She creates a unique level of psychological safety to work through practice in an open and considered way. I thought I needed someone to challenge me, but really, Whitney found ways for me to challenge and critique my own processes which will be far more useful across the life of my career.

Services

My approach to leadership, supervision, and reflective practice is grounded in collaboration, psychological safety, and emotional intelligence. I aim to create a space where curiosity and openness thrive.

It's important to me that we feel safe to share different ideas and perspectives, which helps us explore innovative solutions and reflections together. I really value open feedback and shared learning as key parts of our time together.

I have completed extensive training in therapeutic modalities, and clinical supervision, including The Bouverie Centre's 4-day Clinical Supervision Course, Facilitation of Reflective Practice, Single Session Family Therapy, Mentalisation Based Therapy, Open Dialogue Training, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and numerous leadership courses. I am dedicated to continuous improvement in my practice to provide the best support for my colleagues, and those we help and care for.

Clinical Supervision

I have been receiving regular clinical supervision since the very beginning of my career, and providing supervision for over a decade, and have found both to be extremely rewarding and meaningful, having significant impacts and learnings for my practice and life.

I provide tailored individual clinical supervision for professionals, fostering a supportive environment that encourages personal and professional growth. My approach is grounded in psychological safety and collaboration, ensuring that supervision sessions facilitate learning, reflection, and the development of essential skills.

Group Reflective Practice Sessions

I facilitate group reflective practice sessions designed to promote shared learning and support among professionals and teams. These sessions encourage open dialogue and collective reflection, helping participants to explore experiences, enhance their practice, and develop a deeper understanding of their roles and their work.

I have experience providing strategic leadership and coordinating services and care across multiple programs. I have been actively involved in leading quality improvement initiatives, workforce management and support, and the implementation of training programs, all aimed at enhancing the efficacy, quality and safety of health services. My diverse experience has equipped me with the expertise and leadership necessary to navigate the complexities of healthcare and foster meaningful, genuine relationships with consumers, and staff.

Targeted Leadership Coaching/Mentoring

Through specialised coaching and mentoring, I support leaders in enhancing their leadership skills and emotional intelligence. My focus is on cultivating compassionate leaders who can create positive and productive work environments, ultimately improving both staff wellbeing and patient care.

Career Development and Coaching

I offer career development and coaching services tailored to professionals in the healthcare field. This includes personalised guidance on career pathways, skill enhancement, job search strategies, and professional branding, empowering individuals to achieve their career aspirations and navigate their professional journeys effectively.

Facilitation of Planning Days and Team Building

I provide facilitation for planning days and team-building activities that strengthen collaboration and engagement within teams. These sessions are designed to foster clear communication, align goals, and enhance team dynamics, contributing to a more cohesive and effective work environment.

We approached Whitney to facilitate reflective practice for senior leaders within The Orange Door. Whitney was professional and thoughtful and tailored a reflective practice package to our needs. She was sensitive to the context and able to draw upon frameworks that sought to deepen our teams’ skills across leadership, practice and emotional intelligence.

— Taranjeet Thandi, Program Manager Berry Street

Whitney brings a thoughtful and intentional approach to her work. She listens deeply, offering valuable insights, and always connects with others in a genuine and authentic way.

— Emily Stowell, Operations Manager, Women’s Recovery Network (WREN) and Statement Women’s Mental Health Service

Whitney was a great support for myself and my broader team. When we were having issues with the organisation, she took the time to listen and workshop solutions with myself, and then help develop a plan to enact them. The whole time she did so empathetically, while still appropriately challenging my point of view to broaden my understanding. She successfully managed to be both supportive and empowering, while remaining impartial and fair.

— Daniel Carlei, Associate Nurse Unit Manager, The Alfred Hospital

Thank you for all the ways you've helped me over the past few years Whitney. Your leadership is not only emotionally intelligent, but transformational and motivating, even when you're challenging me! Your supervision has helped change how I see my role, the profession, my skill-set, and shed light on bigger picture I wasn't really fully cognisant of before. I'm incredibly grateful for your expertise and generosity.
